Make your Illinois voting plan
Use Illinois's official voter services to register, locate early or grace-period voting, request a vote-by-mail ballot, confirm local return options, and find the correct Election Day polling place.
Regular registration closes October 6. Online registration continues through October 18. After the regular deadline, eligible voters may use grace-period registration and voting through Election Day at locations designated by their election authority.
Early voting begins September 24 at election-authority offices and may be offered at temporary sites on local schedules. It continues through November 2. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on November 3.
Any registered voter may vote by mail. A mailed application must reach the election authority by October 29. Voters should use their local election authority's instructions for mail, drop box, or hand delivery and verify receipt.

Election timeline
Early voting and ballot mailing begin
Early voting begins at election-authority offices and authorized temporary locations. This is also the first day election authorities may mail ballots to voters who applied.
Regular registration closes
This is the close of regular registration for the General Election. Grace-period registration and voting are available after this date.
Online registration deadline
The Illinois online voter registration application remains available through the sixteenth day before the election.
Mailed vote-by-mail application deadline
The election authority must receive a request submitted by mail by this date. In-person early voting remains available through November 2.
Early voting ends
The statewide early voting period ends. Local sites and hours are set by each election authority.
General Election Day
Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. A voter in line at 7 p.m. may vote. Follow the election authority's instructions for delivering a vote-by-mail ballot or ensuring a mailed ballot receives a timely postmark.
Check the current rule: Voter registration eligibility requires U.S. citizenship, age 18 by Election Day, and residence in the precinct for at least 30 days. Grace-period and Election Day registration require two forms of identification, with at least one showing the current registration address. Identification requirements can also apply to a first-time voter whose mail registration identity was not verified. Contact the local election authority for the exact location and documents.
On the ballot
No statewide public questions
The official 2026 Illinois Voters' Guide showed no statewide questions of public policy for the November 3 General Election. Local referenda can still appear by address, so voters should check their election authority's sample ballot.
Illinois Supreme Court and Appellate Court elections and retention questions are tied to judicial districts. Circuit and subcircuit items are also local or district based. The official Illinois Voters' Guide lists the applicable court items by office and district, so none is counted as a statewide contest in this guide.
Use the Illinois Voters' Guide and your local sample ballot
The state guide covers statewide offices and district-based judicial items. Illinois election authorities administer local ballots. Use the official guide and your election authority's sample ballot to confirm every contest and question for your address.
